A women’s rights activist and a southern Baptist preacher – sounds like a joke, but the pair does not walk into a bar. Instead, Professor Lynn Cummings and Pastor Dana Stewart meet for lattes to brainstorm a charity stage play collaboration when they find themselves strangely enchanted with one another. Lynn is enraptured in Stewart’s infectious optimism, daring to build a multi-million-dollar private school during a recession, but Lynn has a reluctant heart, for reasons only she and God are privy to. Her reluctance feeds the fire of Stewart’s intrigue. He has to have her, not just for her angelic beauty, or her unchained intellect, for more reasons than all the reasons he’ll admit to himself. While their other-worldliness colors their romance, where their two worlds meet proves to be their crucible. They bear intolerance from tradition-oriented trustees figuring Stewart’s feminist arm-piece, who “holds her nose a bit too high,” as a manifestation of Stewart’s progressive agenda gone wild. Envious church women smile in Lynn’s face, but cut their eyes behind her back, namely, Stewart's ex: a deranged, skin-bleaching seductress named Bianca. And then there's Nay, the wide rump, truculent prayer warrior married to an associate pastor, which makes her First Baptist’s de facto first lady – a role threatened as Stewart and Lynn become an item – a role Nay will get down and dirty to retain. On the surface, First Baptist looks like your normal deep south church along the bible belt: pews overrun with women who labor the ministries, sleepy male elders in chancel seats, but had Stewart explained that the reason for their all-male clergy is that they forbid women, Lynn would've never set a foot in the church, nor let her heart grow fond of Stewart, regardless of his years-long effort to change the culture. The hundred-year-old church is governed by third generation descendants of its ex-slave founders, the Ginyard clan, who watched Stewart grow their mini-mart sized church into a near mega church, but now with the ministry's potential realized, they have no more use for Pastor Stewart. When the feds investigate a crusading financial ministry that First Baptist hosted the previous year, the trustees get their chance to try to replace Stewart with a full-blooded Ginyard pastor. Their native son tries to demonize Stewart, although vexed with his own demons, being a philanderer and an abuser, unleashing hell on his battered wife as the battle for the pulpit ensues. He levies attack sermons, laden with enough male-centered minutiae to make Lynn declare war, despite Stewart’s plea for unity. Lynn is a woman divided between her loyalty to the apparent love of her life, and her activist need to dismantle First Baptist's "lesser vessel" culture, but doing so exposes her secret gift. Lynn, for all of her adult life, has been running from the call to preach. No one besides Lynn and Stewart want their relationship to work. There’s venom all around them yet the cosmic pull of their love seems to trump the clear-eyed logic to walk away and cut their losses. The pressure cooker battle for the pulpit forces everyone to choose a side. The waning investigation unmasks all parties involved. The multi-threaded conflict maims relationships long intact, triggering acts of betrayal, vengeance, seduction, sacrifice, and heroism, but every want is paid for with the currency of loss, love, sanity, and even mortality as a battered woman’s life hangs in the balance.
